Designed to help photographers identify and define their personal photographic vision. By evaluating your previous work and images produced during the course, writing assignments and creative exercises, you will identify the themes and ideas that revolve around your photography, and how to apply your vision as a business or fine art sales. Through a process of discussion and various editing assignments, you will create a portfolio collection of images that best represent your personal vision. Images will be shown in a month-long exhibit in a gallery.

Taking photographs of small subjects at close range allows the photographer to explore a fascinating and beautiful world of design, color and shape. This course offers an introduction to both the technical and creative aspects of producing good quality close-up photographs. You will learn how to:

  • focus accurately
  • adjust camera settings for exposure
  • the proper settings to control image sharpness
  • use viewpoint and natural light in composition

In-depth discussions include the pros and cons of close-up equipment and getting the most from existing equipment.

A focus on molt limits and other characteristics in North American birds as the relate to accurately determining their ages. You will cover plumage topography, molt terminology, and molt strategies among songbirds and their close relatives. You will discuss additional "age-ing" techniques such as skulling and morphometrics, and how to determine skull, fat, and mot scores.  Time will be also be spent on:

  • banding ethics
  • safe handling of birds
  • prevention and treatment of stress and injuries
